About Portland's Laurelhurst Neighborhood

The Laurelhurst neighborhood has the most distinctive "old Portland" charm of any neighborhood in the area. While there are some very quaint and charming areas (Irvington, for example), the overall continuity and area which Lauelhurst encompasses surpasses them all. Developed as estates at the turn-of-the-century (20th Century) the charming characteristics can still be found. Many of the estates were sub-divided during the years, and 1920 cottages sprung up. Laurelhurst is one of the few neighborhoods left in the Pacific Northwest which maintains its splendor and grandeur to this day.

The renovations on some these homes have perserved many of the features; Original wood-frame windows with leaded glass, the lovely waves of the glass being noticed at an angle. The honey-comb bathroom tiles. The staircases with carved spindles and bannisters. A few of the homes are on Historical Registers. And sometimes, if you look closely enough, you can see a metal ring in the cement, close to the edge of the sidewalk. YUP -- those were the horse and/or buggy hitches of yesteryear! Laurelhurst is known for its centerally located park where you can walk on a hot summer's day, but feel so cool from all the shade trees, elm, oak . . . A close-in Portland neighborhood, minutes to downtown, but in a world,-- and class -- of its own!
